The Cronenberg family founded the scythe smith company in Gevelsberg as early as 1711. In 1855 the company relocated to Körbecke, about 25 km from its current location in Arnsberg. As the business prospered, in 1870 the company relocated once again, this time to its current location in Sophienhammer in Arnsberg-Müschede.
The production programme changeover came in the 1950s and 1960s. The sole reliance on scythe manufacturing was left behind, and Cronenberg became a provider of high-quality street furniture.
